The Costume Question

Make sure you see the other new post (below this one).
One thing I realized I haven't talked about yet ...

What to wear for your monologue performance

You can either

1. Wear standard "performer's dress":
usually all black or black pants/skirt with a white shirt
(I'll accept variations on the black -- like dark gray, dark brown, navy)

OR

2. Wear a simplified "costume" that fits your character portrayal.
It's OK to modernize the clothing ...

So, for example, if you think a suit coat & tie would best fit your character in his situation, then wear that. I think most of the female characters would be wearing some kind of dress or skirt. You might find that a combination of #1 and #2 works best ... wear black pants & shirt but with a scarf / vest / coat / interesting hat / etc.

My only request:
Don't perform your monologue in school attire.
Change into SOMETHING different, at least #1 above. If the performance happens to fall on a dress down day, please don't perform in jeans & a T-shirt either. You have only your body and voice to create the illusion of character -- take advantage of the gem of truth in the old saying, "The clothing makes the man."

cheerio!

I want to wear a skirt...I just hope I don't trip on it like I did during the workshop! Lol! :-D

yeah, I've got a couple "tangled in long skirt" costume stories. =)

there's nothing more terrifying than trying to get up from your knees in a long skirt when your hands are full or busy... I find that far more stressful than the prospect of tripping. ;)

but your hands aren't full, so you can probably tuck the skirt under when you kneel so that it's out of the way when you stand up.

hehe- that's Exactly why I tend to steer clear of skirts... I'm always terrified I'll trip or something absolutely awful will happen.....

Well, if everyone else is going to wear a skirt, I'll wear one too! :-) I think actors look good when they wear all black, it brings out the subtexting that they are trying to get across. Real good actors can wear all black, yet express their charcter so well that you can "see" them. But, costumes are always fun too!

Muahaha...I'm already thinking of a variety of costumes that would portray Romeo in various amusing ways...I wonder what people would think of him if I wore a tight shirt and had a really pansy voice...

I have this fear that one Sunday when I have to sing in church, I'll fall flat on my face because I tripped on my skirt :). Even better, I could trip on my extremely long orchestra skirt during a concert...that would be smooth. Wearing "costumes" to perform our monologues will be fun! Rebekah

Wow. Who knew a question about clothes could generate so much talk? This is great!!!! =)

Let me sling some random ideas at you people who are asking questions:

Bettina & Taylor: Puck is a mischievous little cuss. I'd say skirts are out. But just about anything else could be "in." Really. ANYTHING.
Puck is the class clown. The practical joker. The guy who yanks your chair out from under you just as you sit down with an entire glass of Coke .. and then laughs at the wet spot on your pants.

NateDawg: You could make Iago a Scotsman and wear Knipe's kilt. hehe

And why do you keep talking about PULLING OFF a skirt?! ;)'
I am officially "disturbed."

Sam: So, what DOES a lovesick wuss wear??? I can't WAIT to find out ... ;)

RionTheLion: Antony's a power-grabbing politician. Dress like that. I bet you look splendid in a coat & tie. ;)

... and as for me?
I would LOVE it if someone would help me put my hair up ... I never have learned to do that.

and I'm not talking about K Link's "bottle" hair ... tho I would love to do that sometime!
