The Last Stand

**don't forget to write up a play review if you saw King Lear**

Feel like you're hauling a pile of rocks uphill right now?
so do I ....

TAKE A BREAK

Friday's drama class will be our last one for two entire weeks. Sad ...

Next Thursday I hope you enjoy lots of turkey & stuffing ("dressing" for you Southerners) and gravy and sweet potato casserole and dessert and football and a nap and whatever else you need to feel rested & recharged after this oh-so-stressful few weeks.

Let your scene rest over the break ... however, don't let your lines get rusty. Run lines with some human once or twice during vacation (or as needed) so they're rock-solid when you come back to school on Monday the 28th.

THEN BACK TO WORK

After next week (the holiday), there are only two weeks before performance! Hit the ground running on Monday the 28th with rehearsals. My goal during Nov 28-Nov 30 (Mon-Wed) is to watch everyone's scene at least once. Be nice to me if I ask you to do it during recess. =) This is my only chance to really work with you on characterization.

During drama class on Thursday & Friday, Dec 1 & 2, I'll watch your scenes and give you a "workshop" grade. You'll perform your scene in front of me and another group so they can offer ideas as well.

*Do you know your lines?
*Have you worked on characterization? Is your character distinct and well-rounded?
*Have you thought about blocking and stage movement?
*Can I hear you clearly?

The following week (performance week), I'll schedule a "dress rehearsal" time with you on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday during recess or after school. That's your last chance to ask me any questions ...

Performances are Thursday and Friday, Dec 8 & 9.
Thursday -- 3rd & 4th grades, plus any parents who can't come on Friday
Friday -- 6th-8th grades, plus parents who want to come

Please give yourself a break over Thanksgiving, especially if you're "tired" of your scene. Come back to school after the break with renewed enthusiasm -- and enjoy it! Y'all are working on some awesome scenes. Let me know how I can help.

Lewis says Rilian looks like Hamlet ... and that's traditionally all-black.

Just gotta track down a sword.... Rilian's *got* to have an awesome sword. No wimpy one ... he's the prince of Narnia, after all. '

as for the chair ...
shall we go chair scrounging over break? =) We need to find a wooden chair w/ arms and paint it silver ...

the rest of you:
think of what you need to stage your scene (props, stage "furniture"--as needed, costumes) and let me know about stuff you can't find.

Graham Martin likes to build stuff .... so does Mrs. Smith. Both would probably be willing to help you create a hard-to-find prop if you ask soon and nicely. ;)

Hey...I can get my hands on a couple REAL swords that have been dulled so that they aren't very sharp but still look real. I just need to know soon if you want me to get them. I am sure that they would be welcome to our *gentle* use! Just let me know!

just thinking about the props makes me more excited...and nervous. but i need to figure out what i'm supposed to wear...i'm not even a human!! what i think would be pretty cool, but almost completely impossible...wearing chort stilts...since puddleglum is tall and i'm not...but since that won't help, do you have any suggestions??

Yippee! Thanksgiving break is coming soon! I am really looking forward to a break. I can't believe we're doing our scenes so soon...time flies.

Bethany -- yeah, definitely -- I'd love to take a look at the swords ... either for Rilian or for Jill & Puddleglum if we can find a long one for Rilian. Bring them in when you can. We'll keep them locked up when they're not being used.

Claire -- we'd talked about scuba flipper thingies for your feet (mwuhahahahaha -- that's awesome) ... lots of drab colors (marsh-looking) ...
how about also a brown backpack or some kind of sack or something ... plus a tall hat. The hat will be important.
Puddleglum's clothing needs to all be droopy ... cuz he's kinda droopy. ;) So maybe shoot for a shirt that's a couple sizes too big?

PS ... Get well soon, Claire!!

what should me and bettina wear?
i think i saw something about us going to a private school w/ a uniform....*ponders that thought*

LOL, Taylor. You guys should be all set on the "uniform" thing. ;)

Seriously,
I think you should go with the "preppy rich girl" look. The story is timeless, so set it in 2005 and go with whatever preppy rich girls are wearing these days ... or as close as you can get without having to go out and buy a bunch of stuff.

Hmm...ideas for a sledge? Two chairs covered with something white?

preppy + rich = abercrombieish type clothes, or uniform style = iono, think of a movie with a preparatory school (hence the word prep) and think of their uniforms somethin like that would be my suggestion :) or just look in your closet and pick out some of you're nicer new cov outfits but make it...iono...more snobby...if something can be made snobby...hope this helps
