Those Odd Folks We Call Characters . . .
Our next unit is on characterization ... creating a character, pushing objectives, choosing tactics, "beats" in the scene ... all that good stuff.
So ....
what exactly makes a character a ... character?
Do you expect to feel something different when you're "in character"?
Do you want to think (invent) your character's thoughts while on stage?
Or is the character more detached, more separate from the actor?

..that's a hard question..so you can answer first-
if you really know your character you should know what they would do and think and how they would react. i also think you use a lot of sterio typing for your person.
i try to make myself feel like the character i am....i only felt that way once or twice when doing the Iago speech though. It happens to be that those two times were rehearsal. Oh well.
I think it is important to think about your character. To know their tone, style, if they have any special words, it they are quiet or outgoing, ect... That way when you are on stage you can act the way that you think that character would in the situations you are in. To be yourself, but to act as someone else. That is why 2 people could have the same teacher, character, analysis, and mindset...but give a totally diffrent impression of who their character is. It adds life to acting when people bring their style into the charcter instead of everyone being exactly the same!

I kinda dont understand the question...but you just have to think like the character would think before going on stage or wherever you are preforming. You can put yourself in every day situations and think how the character would respond/react in those situations. So you just dont think like yourself, but you think of yourself as that character. :)
well I think that when you create a character it sortof becomes like split personality for the actor. Yes I think that the person should feel like the charactor he/she is portraying. sorry I kan't spel.
I think I agree with Bethany. When I act, I'm myself acting like another person. I don't really expect to feel something different when I'm "in character". That was a hard question.
Yeah what Ryan said sorta.Thats the trick of acting getting too know your character, and all there pet peeves.

I don't know if this is correct "acting technique", but I tend to relate the character I'm playing to my real personality (unless it's a REALLY extreme character). For example: when I was doing Portia's monolouge, I tried to think how I would feel if I were married and my husband was acting strange and secretive. Like Casey said, I think that when the character is speaking, it's like it's a "split personality" between the actor and the character. I can't really explain it. I don't think TOTALLY like the character (because I'm still thinking about lines!), but I don't act totally like myself.
Okay, now that that's as clear as mud... :-D
